Join Us!

Want to join the fun? Have you thought of volunteering? There are many volunteer opportunities available with different levels of time and commitment so please consider spending some time with us at the Thomaston Opera House.

We are working to restore this beautiful historic building while also developing it as a vital community resource for Thomaston and the entire regional area. You don’t need specific skills to work with us: Every volunteer contributes to our success, and we always have a wide variety of activities for anyone with the energy and desire to participate.

If you do have a particular skill or talent, please consider sharing it. Whether your interests lie “behind the scenes” (sets, technical, ushering, etc.), trodding the boards” (performing on stage), or as an audience member, we can use your help! Join us today and immediately see the results of your contribution.

No experience is necessary - just a love of this thing we call “the theatre”.

Our volunteer categories are:

  • Production Volunteers
  • Friends of the Opera House
  • Regional Board
  • Board of Commissioners

PRODUCTION VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers work in many areas related to the preparation and performances of our community theatre series as well as other performances presented at the Opera House. The positions fall into three categories: On-stage, Backstage and Customer Service.

  • On-stage: Actors, Singers, Dancers, Musicians
  • Backstage: Directors, Designers, Stagehands, Production Crew, Costumers, Set Construction/Painting
  • Customer Service: Ushers, Box Office, Retail Sales

Our Production Volunteers have fun while working hard, and we would not be able to produce a show without the efforts of all of them.

FRIENDS OF THE OPERA HOUSE

In addition to donors to the Annual Fund, the Friends of the Opera House include dedicated volunteers who commit to participate in activities beyond the needs of community theatre productions.

These volunteers work with the Board of Commissioners, Opera House staff, and the Regional Board on administrative needs, maintenance and repair, or other assistance needed for the overall organization rather than for a specific production.
Friends make a commitment to be available for specific duties on an on-call basis.

Friends volunteer for many kinds of activities including:

  • Marketing/Publicity
  • Fund- Raising Events
  • Educational Outreach
  • Equipment Repair
  • Maintenance Crews
  • Bulk Mailing
  • Box Office Staff
  • Retail Operations

The Friends of the Opera House, through their donations of time and money, are a vital resource, making it possible for the organization to grow and develop in many areas that can not be accomplished by the staff alone.

REGIONAL BOARD

The Regional Board of the Thomaston Opera House consists of twelve volunteers who have a strong interest in and desire to maintain and strengthen the exposure of the Opera House in the regional area outside the Town of Thomaston.
The members are appointed by the Thomaston Opera House Commission to two-year terms and are not required to be residents of Thomaston.

The Regional Board will be actively involved in assisting the Commission administratively, but will focus mainly on the following:

  • Promoting the Opera House in the regional area
  • Fund Development
  • Serving as an Information Resource
  • Organizing and implementing social events and programs
  • Contributing to the continuing restoration with guidance and fund development

The Regional Board will meet at least four times a year with one meeting including the Commission and Executive Director. Members of the Regional Board will choose to participate in other events for the Opera House through the year.

BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS

The Thomaston Opera House Commission consists of nine volunteers appointed by the Board of Selectmen to maintain, operate, and improve the building as well as administer the non-profit corporation called Thomaston Opera House. All members of the Commission must be residents of Thomaston.

The full Commission meets at least once a month with the Executive Director. Committee meetings are scheduled as needed. Special meetings may be called by the officers of the Commission.

The Commission oversees the operations of the paid staff as well as volunteer activities, is responsible for financial control, and is committed to maintain and restore the historic building as a community resource.

Mission Statement:
The Thomaston Opera House Commission seeks to preserve and protect the landmark Opera House for the interest and benefit of future generations of Thomaston residents, while striving to create and maintain a viable regional center for both community-based activities and professional performing arts.

The Thomaston Opera House is a catalyst - working with community and professional organizations, individuals and government agencies to strengthen and expand local and regional interest in and support for the arts and related activities.
